Derrame pleural é um estado fisiológico anormal resultante de um desequilíbrio entre a formação e a reabsorção do líquido pleural. Contudo, esse achado permite ao médico uma oportunidade de estudar o líquido pleural, na tentativa de diagnosticar a doença de base do paciente. Nesse artigo será realizada uma revisão das causas de derrame pleural, bem como as condutas com vistas ao diagnóstico do mesmo.

Pleural effusion is an abnormal physiological state resulting from an imbalance between the formation and resorption of pleural fluid. However, this finding allows the physician an opportunity to study the pleural fluid in an attempt to diagnose the underlying disease of the patient. In this article we will review the causes of pleural effusion and conduits for diagnosis.
